The New PB&J: Social Media Strategy

Peanut butter and jelly go together wonderfully. They are, regardless of your choice in brand of peanut butter or flavor of jelly, a match made in heaven. Within the pair, you can have literally hundreds of different types of combinations: Jif & apple, honey peanut butter & grape, Peter Pan & strawberry…the list goes on.There’s even talk about it changing the world. And I’m proposing that social media and strategy should be the same way.

When starting out in using social media, you should first formulate a clear plan that tells you why you’re utilizing social media, where you’re headed with your social media usage, how to get there, and the characteristics of your particular use of social media. Thus, a great strategy includes all four of these components:

  • Mission: Why are you using social media to begin with? What’s the purpose?
  • Vision: Where do you want to be in a year? 2 years? 5 years? Where are you headed with your social media usage, and how realized will your mission be in a given timeframe?
  • Strategy: It seems obvious that your SMS (Social Media Strategy) would include strategy. Once you know why you’re using social media, and where you want to be in a given timeline, you need to plan how you’re going to get from point A to point B.
  • Values: Along the way, there are going to be choices that you need to make. Either choice may get you closer to fulfilling your mission and seeing your vision realized, but which choice do you take? Do you flip a coin? No. Values are determinant factors in how you execute the strategy that assist you in making tough choices.

Over the next few days, we’re going to take each of these components and break them down one per blog post. Hopefully, by the end of it all, you’ll have some idea about formulating a SMS.
